Family came here for breakfast after staying at Home Hotel for the night. Breakfast is basic. Nothing spectacular. The hollandaise sauce seemed to come from a packet you just add milk to. I had a breakfast sandwich which was fine. Kids menu is legit. Coffee is what you'd expect from a little mom and pop place. Service was good. Cute atmosphere. Not many places for breakfast in this little town so this was fine.

We came here on a Monday. I wanted breakfast, but unfortunately that ended at 11:30 AM, and I am not an early riser! I opted for the chicken sandwich with pineapple, and my boyfriend ordered a half ham sandwich on wheat bread. He got one trip to the salad bar with his, and I ordered the sweet potato fries as my side. We usually do this to share both sides. Both of our sandwiches were good, the salad was good, as well as a sweet potato fries. They were really crispy! Oh, and the pickles are good! The coffee to me tasted a little watery, just like what you would get at any old place, or even a gas station. Nothing special about it. You might think it would come out differently by looking at the coffee chalk art on the walls. Nevertheless, coffee is coffee when you're in a small town like this, and you get what you get! The service was fine, and it didn't take long to get our food. The waitress brought out ketchup and fry sauce, which is great for us Utahns! Our total bill was $18 for a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries, a half sandwich with one trip to the salad bar, and one coffee. Yes, I would return, but need to remember breakfast is over at 11:30 AM!

This is the sort of unique place I like to go to on road trips. I made a detour off a trip on I-15 both to see the town and to find food. I'm vegetarian, so there weren't many options, but I got the soup/salad/bread combo -- the vegetable soup was a little underwhelming (lots of cabbage and carrots, on the plus side; not much flavor, on the minus) but the salad bar was pretty adequate for a place like this. The homemade scone (what I would call fry bread, but I guess they call that a "scone" in Idaho and Utah), which came with copious butter and some jam that tasted homemade, was great. I had a hard time picking between the five different kinds of pie on offer, but I got the chocolate cream pie, which was dreamy. The other vegetarian options (unless it's breakfast time -- unfortunately, they only serve breakfast until 11:30am) amounted to pasta, salad, or a few appetizers. (Including fried pickles, which I was sorry to not get to try.) The WiFi worked, which is always a nice surprise when you're in a remote place.

We dined here for breakfast because the Alpaca Inn gave a 10% discount. We ordered the special, which was strawberry French toast, bacon, and eggs. The French toast was cold and stale, but the bacon and coffee were pretty good. The service was poor, but expected for the small town. I would probably go back for lunch if we are ever back in Lava Hot Springs.

My large family of 6 went to the chuck wagon and it was....AWESOME! Some of us had the special including pancakes, bacon and egg(excellent). Others had plates including marble rye toast(amazing quality and yummy jam), eggs sunny side up(perfect) and freshly cut hash browns, as well as the best breakfast sausage links I've ever had at a restarant. the drinks were also of high quality in my opinion.(OJ, coffee and strawberry lemonade(huge!) The service was good and the wait for food was average. food came hot and ready :). great job chuck wagon! we'll be back for sure

First time here. Omg do yourselves a favor and eat garbage before you eat here, you'll be better off. Had breakfast buffet. 9.99$ worth .99cents. Pancakes were so hard they broke in half with the fork. Waffles were completely dry. White gravy for the biscuits was pasty. The food seemed to have been on the buffet a LONG time. Wish I hadn't wasted 25$ for the two of us with drinks. Please don't support this dump. This is my first time to Lava, everything else has been great in this little town.

Please ignore the bad ratings. They must be from snooty a holes looking for 5 stars wherever they go. This is a small town eatery with a small town atmosphere. The staff was super friendly and the food was fresh, hot, and delicious. Very reasonably priced and highly recommended. The only thing I wish is that the coffee was stronger. Will come back every time we visit Lava.

Wish I would have listened to the other comments. The chicken fried steak wasn't very good, but the scones were delicious.

A Complete Waste of Time: The only thing good about the chuck wagon restaurant is the clean bathrooms. The food we ordered was either tasteless (chicken fried steak), cold (chili) or burnt beyond recognition (fish & chips). Additionally, the waitress acknowledged the burnt fish & chips as she placed the plate on the table and then she began to walk away as if burnt food was an everyday occurrence at the establishment & if burnt food was going to be acceptable with us. The fresh bread was terrible & the service was slow at best. Before you spend your hard earned vacation dollars please read & take this review seriously.

Even using the low standards expected at a diner in a small resort town, this is not a good place. I went here for dinner with a group and we each ordered entrees. I had the trout and my wife had the french dip. Both of our entrees were overcooked and bland. The service from the waitress seemed to go from clueless to verging on rude. I wouldn't go here again. There was another place with a simlar menu down the street called Johnny's where I had breakfast that was much better all around.

We stopped on our way to Yellowstone park. I had the breakfast special--an egg muffin and hashbrowns. Fresh! Was very happy with the food and service.

I really would like to think this place has potential. The ingredients seemed decent enough, the service was pleasant. Your typical small town restaurant with mediocre coffee and a contingent of locals holding down the tables. But, our breakfast there was not good. Cold food. I ordered cottage fried potatoes and biscuits and gravy, and my wife a hashbrown skillet. The fries were deep fried, not sauted, B&G average. Everything was not cooked enough (raw onions) and cold.

If you want a great breakfast in lava this is the place. But the hitch is they stop breakfast early (11:30) and I'm not to hip on there lunch/dinner menu as it is ok not gr8. I order the same breakfast every time i can pull my butt out of bed early, meat lovers skillet. Loaded with pig.

My boyfriend and I ate breakfast here one Sunday before heading back to SLC. The service was very prompt and friendly, the food was quite good, and the prices were reasonable. When I come back to Lava Hot Springs, I'd like to try this place for lunch or dinner.

Poor service, food ok.we were left way too long without having our order taken and without coffee. Our food was a little on the cool side by the time it got to us

silverware was dirty (several pieces), waitress picked up all coffee cups by the rim, our food took an hour to arrive (really) We had a breakfast skillet & corn beef hash, it was pretty mediocre, we barely ate it even though we were famished. The pancake oddly enough was fabulous.

The portions are HUGE to the point that the food is off-puting. My husband ordered the chicken fried steak and it came on two plates. The sides came on another plate. There is no way that he could even eat half of the food on that plate. Since we were in a hotel, we couldn't take the food back with us and ended up wasting a lot of food. The food itself wasn't great.

They were very busy! Which is great, I enjoy going to a restaurant that is bumpin'. We had a group of eight, and they were able to accommodate for us. We ordered our food and got our drinks, and waited... And waited... Then, Waited some more. They brought out one burger and by the time they brought the rest of our meals out, that first burger was gone and our friend was asking for dessert! Besides the thirty minute wait, it was a great meal. I ordered the Hawaiian Burger with avocado and a side of sweet potato fries. If I were to go back; however, I would definitely order the buffalo chips! Holy cow, those things receive 5 stars, easily. My burger was exactly how I wanted it and I did like that they put the condiments on the side-- it allowed me to BMOB (build my own burger). Back to the buffalo chips: they are thinly sliced potatoes with some type of delicious seasoning. And to top it off, their fry sauce was an awesome addictive. Again, the wait was long but the food was great. I'm not sure if it was simply the fact that we were all famished from soaking in the Lava Hot Pots all day or not. But it was awesome. TIPS & TRICKS: * The "Sliders" are also yummy. Three burgers that take about 4 bites to eat, but they are fun little samples of what their meals would taste like. * Buffalo Chips. * If you can't find a place to sit, there is a nifty side room with extra seating.

Greasy spoon with awesome pie and good coffee. This place is exactly what you expect in a small town. Its got a cabin feel to it with lots of wood, everywhere. There is a breakfast buffet and its within walking distance of everything (much like the rest of the town). Our waitress was very nice. I had cherry pie, it was worth the diabetes. Have some breakfast and get some scratch tickets.

Came to Chuck Wagon Restaurant with Dad for an early dinner before heading to the hot springs pools down the road. Just walking up to this place I thought, "best stay away from any meat items." So I ordered a garden salad and was impressed at the mix of veggies: mushrooms, cucumber, black olives, carrot, green pepper, tomato. Oddly enough, I don't know how many of the items on the salad were actually listed on the menu. But it was fresh and decent and the variety of toppings made up for the fact that they use iceberg lettuce as a base. Service was a little off, but I think our server was overwhelmed and tired. She was pleasant, though, and the prices were good. The menu actually said they offer gluten-free bread on all sandwiches, which really surprised me. You'd need to make sure the items ON the sandwich are GF, of course, but for a small-town diner that is truly impressive. Most items on the menu fall under the Fried category, so if that's your thing, you'll definitely find something you like.

I thought I'd written this review a while ago...but yelp says otherwise. We stayed a weekend in Lava Hot Springs and this restaurant was...about it. Among a few others this was where we decided to go and I was not impressed. Cost was fair, but food was, meh. My tuna melt was greasy...granted I suppose it must be. And definitely not a vegetarian friendly menu. Service was all right, but it seems our server wrote our companion's order down wrong, and then didn't offer to correct it when he drew her attention to it. Kind of a he-said she-said thing. Wouldn't go back, but I suppose limited options might influence otherwise.

I had the 3 piece fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes, corn and a salad. Everything at the salad bar is out of a can or carton except the lettuce and tomatoes. Why does the lettuce look like that?? The corn is out of a can and the potatoes are instant. The chicken consisted of a leg, a thigh and a breast. The chicken was cooked ok, but the leg was about 2.5 inches long(weird) and I've never seen a chicken breast that shape. I would bet that they don't even bread their own chicken. ALL their desserts are shipped in. I call this a SYSCO restaurant because everything is processed, canned or put in a carton at a factory somewhere and the truck backs up to the restaurant and the people working there furiously open cans and cartons. The restaurant wasn't overly busy but it took over 30 minutes to get order. I might (doubtful) try it for breakfast but never again for dinner. I got sick the next day.

I ordered the Denver omelet and waited a hour for it! And when it came out it was cold. And on top of all that our waiter sucked! Food was ok just cold.

Although I was a bit hesitant to eat here because of the low reviews, after seeing it was pretty much our only option for breakfast in Lava Hot Springs, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt. Well, let's just say it wasn't as terrible as others have experienced. It was OK. Nothing special, but not horrible. The coffee wasn't good, but wasn't undrinkable, I suppose, and the waitress was a bit stiff. I had the pancakes, which were... chewy, I guess is the only way I can describe it. They were okay, but hard to cut apart. My boyfriend ordered the meat lovers skillet and said it was good. Packed full of bacon and potatoes and topped with an egg. Overall, it got the job done and filled us up, but, probably not a place I'll be rushing back to.

there's really nothing special about this place. its food. I had the chef salad which was good except the hard boiled egg wasn't thoroughly cooked and there was a whole can of olives on my plate. the salad included mushrooms which was nice but they were cut so big it was ridiculous. I did order a piece of cheesecake. it tasted good but it was mealy...like they handed blended the cream cheese and sugar correctly. I got the piece to share with my husband as it was over $3. I thought for that price it was probably a large portion. no. it was definitely not meant to share.

Just ate there and it was terrible. We had lunch after a nice soak in the hot pools. The freshly cooked bread really did look freshly cooked until we cut in to it and it was half frozen. the soup of the day was luke warm at best. Seems like the microwave was on the fritz. I ordered the tacos because when I asked if they were good I got a hearty YES! from our server. Well, the only thing that made this a taco was that it was served on a tortilla with salsa. The meat was an old, charred burger that had been "chopped" up. it had no taco seasoning or flavor whatsoever. There were actually pieces of gristle.
